Times have changed : people now prefer to see the shows of platforms or streaming rather than buy DVDs...

Sandentwins a écrit : 18 01 2026, 12:03 I heard somewhere that the 2020 pandemic was a first hamper to an English dub.

Later, other sources told me that the producer for MCO has left BlueSpirit, who retains copyright over the series but might lose interest in it. It is up to them to reach out to dubbing studios and merch companies, and if they don't, then nothing can happen.

The only network who'd be interested in doing an English dub is NITV from Australia. But they can't dub it themselves and have to wait for BlueSpirit to order an English sub.

The series seems to wholly depend on DVD sales rather than merch to make its money, and then again they don't even seem interested. I think they just gave up on MCOG as a whole, and yet hold tight copyright on them for some reason. There's no interest in reaching out to merch companies or dubbing studios, so all you'll have is fan made subs for s4. Sorry.

I think many people consider the first season to be the only one; they're not aware of the newer ones. It's strange, considering how the High Priest of the Cities of Gold refers to the one at the end of S1 as "cities", it's like they weren't sure there'd be anymore shows, but then fan interest grew with Tim Skutt's DVD set (which I and others did subtitles for) and then it got S2 onwards greenlit, but then interest faded again.

I liked the S2-S4 episodes, they concluded the story and had the truly international feel, but I can see why many people who saw S1 as children would've "outgrown" it. I remember when S1 came out on DVD in the UK, and the local HMV had a pile of the boxsets on release day. The pile didn't go down at all after three weeks, it seemed that the later generations just weren't interested. I think they overestimated the demand for the show and supplied too much. Shame, really.

What happened to international distribution of S3-S4?

When the DVDs of the English language version of Mysterious Cities of Gold S1 sold well, it triggered renewed interest in the franchise, enough for Chalopin and Deyries to make S2 to S4, set in China and so on. While there was an English language version of S2 available on DVD in the UK, after that, interest seems to completely evaporate in releasing S3 and S4 in the UK, let alone America.

So what happened to make S3 and S4 only available in French (AFAIK)? Were the S2 DVD sales not enough? Or did the French want to keep the show for themselves? There was an English dub made of S3 which I luckily caught and enjoyed, but S4 was harder and was in French only with English subtitles, but that was the end of the show at that point, and a sense of closure for the characters.

I just wish I could've owned official versions of the DVDs, but looking now for the French S3 and S4, the rarity is through the roof, with ridiculously high prices! Did the momentum for the show stall completely? Did everyone lose interest in Mysterious Cities of Gold, or was the story, for most, considered finished in S1?

It's a shame, because it was a great set of follow-up seasons to a classic first season, which was for decades, the only one.
